Quoted statements of Zucker and university administrators

“Art Zucker, chair of the university board, said that Friday’s announcement was “not a new decision” in that the board has said since June that barring some dramatic change, operations would need to be suspended. Even if an agreement takes place in the months ahead, he said, “it’s felt by the administration that there might not be the right faculty and the right course structure even if everything went positively,” he said. The announcement Friday was to encourage students and faculty to plan accordingly, he said.”

(comment: Please note that Chairman Zucker is speaking for the Board of Trustees of Antioch University on February 25th 2008, the deadline set for an agreement between the AU BoT and the ACCC. His quote states the position of the “university administration.” Following that board meeting, it was the ACCC’s position that they would require the full participation of the University to deal with accreditation issues for any possible future agreement. As we can see above, the ‘University Administration’ was unlikely to be a benefit in accreditation discussions regarding the college, since they believed there might not be the ‘right faculty’.)

Mary Lou LaPierre, vice chancellor and chief spokeswoman for the university administration, said that the board believes it would be wrong to recruit new first-year students until facilities are fixed up and academic programs are improved. “We need to take a look at the curriculum, with some concern that the curriculum is not attractive enough to attract enough students,” she said. Time will be needed to plan those changes and for “market testing,” LaPierre said.

Tullisse Murdock, chancellor of the university, said Tuesday that the board was very sad about its decision, but felt it had no viable option to offer a high quality education. (…) A team of scholars — some from Antioch and some from outside — will work to develop a new plan for the college and a new curriculum that might attract more students if the college reopens, she said.

Antioch College takeover negotiations fail: University said it needed $12.2 million in cash up front

Dayton Daily News:
Transferring the college assets to the ACCC while the university still had outstanding bonds “creates a huge negative impact on the university’s balance sheet,” the university said. Murdock elaborated. “Because we had so much debt in relation to the bonds we needed to have enough assets to…It put us in financial jeopardy. If you take away all the assets of the college then it gives bankers pause.”
“Which begs an interesting question: How important are the college’s assets to the bonds? College faculty, staff and alumni critical of the
administration have questioned the university in the past on whether the college’s assets have served as collateral on bonds. The
university has always maintained that the bonds were financed based on each campus’ projected revenue, and the college assets were never at
risk.

But it appears that nonetheless, the university’s eggs are in one basket. Murdock on the phone said it needed some assets - either the
college, or the $12.2 million in cash - if it hoped to secure future loans on other campuses that need updates (Los Angeles, Santa Barbara).
